This novel takes place during the blitz in London during World War II. Juliet Lansdown is a new deputy librarian at the Bethnal Green Library. Katie Upwood is a new temporary employee at the library while she get ready to attend the university. Sofie Baumann is a young Jewish refugee who came to London on a domestic service visa who loves escaping to the library whenever she has a chance. When the bombs destroy the library building Juliet relocates the books to the local underground station. The three young women face many tragedies, but saving the library may also save their spirits.
