Event Details
April is National Poetry Month! Join us to celebrate and practice writing this beautiful literary form in a 3 part workshop series led by poet, teaching artist, and rapper Sean Avery Medlin (he/they). Writers of all experience levels are welcomed. Open to teens ages 15+ and adults.
On Self-Love and Celebration is a Creative Writing workshop for poets. Inspired by poet Ariana Brown’s workshop “On Love, Names, and Odes”, this workshop focuses on the beloved subject of many poems, love itself, but particularly love that the poet has for oneself. By studying odes and freeverse from various women and queer writers, poets will try their hand at a bold declaration, with special attention to how specificity of body, memory, and sensory experience transform the work.
Sean Avery Medlin (he/they) writes poems, raps, and sometimes essays. Their art questions the limitations of Black masculinity, media representation, and personal narrative. Their work has been featured in Phoenix New Times, Chicago Tribune and Teen Vogue. All their work is available online at superseanavery.com. Medlin is the author of 808s & Otherworlds: Memories, Remixes, & Mythologies (2021) a collection of essays and poetry, available in print, digital, and audiobook.
